Biography / CV

Born in Hampshire in 1960, Lucy moved to Leicestershire where she gained a BA Hon's in sculpture at Loughborough University. After Graduating, Lucy determined to develop her skills as an animal sculptor.

Artist Statement

I am a figurative artist, focusing mainly on animals. My aim is to express the gestures, personality and character of the subjects I study. Some of the works capture a moment in time - the fluid lines of racing greyhounds, or the staccato bouts of boxing hares. The dynamics of interactive forms result in sculptures that vigorously dominate the spaces that they occupy. Conversely, other sculptures explore the brooding presence or serenity of a static form - a sentinal baboon, a standing horse. The contained mass creates a commanding presence, the viewers response is instinctive. The essential focus of my work is to capture the spirit of the animals I study.

I work in methodical fashion, starting my reseach with small drawings and maquettes, which are then scaled up to larger two and three dimensional works. I use wax over copper wire for the maquettes, and it is at this stage that I establish the all important poise and gesture of the subject. I have recently started committing these small waxes to cast bronze editions. The larger sculptures that develop from the initial studies are modelled in plaster or clay, over welded steel or flexible aluminium armatures. Moulds are taken off the original sculptures and casts made, in either bronze or reinforced resin. The final stage of the process is the sensitive application of colour patinas, which serves to emphasize the ssculptural form and detailing of my work.
